The creation of a new civic space is a direct follow on from Camden’s Citizens’ Assembly on the Climate Crisis held in July 2019 which resulted in 17 recommendations. At its Full Meeting on 7th October 2019, the Council unanimously agreed to take forward all these recommendations.

No.19 Community Fridge

Photo of the Community FridgeAt No.19 Highgate Road a Community Fridge is being set up by the collective of groups based there including Refugee Community Kitchen, Kentish Town Vegbox, Cooperation Town, Think & Do and Camden Council. The Fridge will help prevent waste by collecting surplus food and offering it to the community for free. 40% of food waste losses happen at the retail or consumer level. When food waste goes to landfill it releases Methane a greenhouse gas which has approximately an 80 times more warming effect than CO2.

If you would like to be involved in the team that will be maintaining the fridge and sourcing the food please get in touch via thinkanddocamden@gmail.com.

We are not accepting food from homes due to Covid, but instead collecting surplus food from local retailers and suppliers. If you are a local business and have surplus food please get in touch.

Location:
19 Highgate Road, Kentish Town, NW5 1JY
Opening times 9am – 8pm Monday to Friday
Saturday (approximate) 10am-4pm

The Camden Bee Line

The aim of this project is to link all schools in the borough, who are rewilding/greening up parts of their school grounds, into one Camden Bee-Line map. T&D volunteers will also be on hand to help with the design of school grounds, and arrange community planting days, Our project partners are Camden Clear Air Initiative, and Foodscape vertical food growing project.

If you work at a local school, or are a parent/carer, come and join the fun.  Together let’s turn Camden schools into one buzzing Bee Line. Let’s create bee lines, not yellow lines. To get involved email thinkanddocamden@gmail.com.

Camden Forest

Logo for Camden ForestCamden Forest is a project to tackle climate change and increase biodiversity by planting more trees in our borough. Dreamt up by Think & Do, the plan is to plant 2025 trees in Camden by the year 2025. The trees are two-year-old ‘whips’ – provided free by The Conservation Volunteers.  Since October 2020 nearly a thousand trees have been given away at farmers’ markets, schools and a mosque, or delivered by bike as part of permitted exercise during lockdown. Rowan, Crab Apple, Dogwood and Wild Cherry – all of which have blossoms and fruits that are essential for birds and pollinators – have been planted in estates, school grounds, private gardens and in large pots on balconies or terraces right across the borough from Somerstown to Hampstead.

School students who became Tree Guardians have been inspired to write stories and poems by planting and caring for the trees, observing how they change through the seasons and watching them grow. The response to this project has been so enthusiastic that the Forest will start spreading to neighbouring boroughs of Islington and Haringey in the autumn.

Free Market

What if we could cut out food waste from the borough? In collaboration with Refugee Community Kitchen and Cooperation Town we have been co-hosting a ‘Free market’ at 19 HIghgate Road. to cut down on food waste and develop a circular sharing economy in other items too.
